There’s no harm in purchasing these “how to” books, no-one ever lost out by taking tips on board, however you as a songwriter need to be careful not to over-think too much and also avoid thinking that there is a perfect formula to writing the perfect song. There is no such thing as a perfect song and there is no such thing as a perfect formula. This is one of the best and worst things about songwriting, anybody could write a hit, but there is no single path to writing one. Experiment, be inspired, take advice on board, but don’t waste your time looking for the perfect formula on how to write the perfect song, as there isn’t one!

Writing Songs can be a positive release for many…

One big positive (with some negatives) for all those amateur songwriters out there is that there is help out there for you. The example I’m going to give is “Friday” by Rebecca Black. Did she know how to write a song before Friday came along? (Some would argue that she still doesn’t!) However that one hit, which, although it wasn’t written by her, shot her to stardom. From this it looks like she’s going to be offered lots of different deals where I wouldn’t be surprised if she started getting a cut of the songwriting royalties. Just remember, one hit is all you need to propel you into the world of professional songwriting. My message to the budding young songwriters of the world: work hard and be lucky! (It also wouldn’t hurt to have some rich parents who could pay for you to have a song written for you along with a music video and a high quality recording!)
