I only recently heard of the term Gattaca parents when I came across it in an article on the Geekery Online. The article was about reproductive technology and how far it has come to giving us “designer babies” or children that have been genetically screened for anything from illness to eye color. The term comes from the movie Gattaca, a sci-fi movie in which it is the norm for children to be pre-screened for any possible defect, while allowing the parents to select eye color, gender, hair color, etc.

I saw Gattaca when it came out in the theater, but I had no idea that 10 years later we would have the technology to design babies at a genetic level. Though it is not like genetics are being altered. I guess the process is that certain eggs and sperm are screened for traits that the parents either want or don’t want. The easiest trait to consider would be gender, since all you have to do is select out all sperm with an Y chromosome so only X chromosomed sperm are used.

I understand the health issues behind this type of science and I support it. For example, the article mentioned that recently, the first girl to be created to be breast-cancer free was born. I guess the family has a very high chance of women in the family getting breast cancer (like 80%), so doctors removed any eggs or sperm that had the potential for the cancer. However, though the girl doesn’t have the family genes, no one is quite sure if she is 100% protected as there are still environmental influences. However, how comforting for the parents to know, that there is a slim to no chance that their daughter will ever have to suffer from that form of cancer.

So health issues aside, just how far are parents willing to go? If given the opportunity would you have wanted the doctors to design your children to exacting qualities? This is the Gattaca parent.
