Many people suffer from allergies that make it hard for them to have dogs. Usually people are tested for sensitivity to animal dander but some individuals are actually allergic to dog saliva. As someone who has bad allergies and has been tested many times, I’ve always told allergists that I would get rid of physicians before giving away my beloved dogs. Fortunately, I’ve not reacted to dander.

Recently, however, I’ve been told that I do have pollen allergies and that having dogs is a problem. Dogs go into the yard and bring in pollen in on their fur, faces, and feet. I have been told to wipe them down completely every single time they come back in the house. Is this reasonable? Not to me. I see no way that I could wipe them down without getting pollen all over me. Even if I then leap into the shower, I’ve still had pollen all over me.

I’ve had dogs that were allergic to pollen also. That’s not so unusual. They needed frequent baths or hosing off. Pollen has previously been an inconvenient factor in my life with my dogs. Now it presents another complication. I’ve resolved to continue keeping them well-groomed, frequently bathed, and brushed. To do those things, however, immerses me in pollen. Are they worth sneezes and coughs? They are to me.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ll relocate, if necessary, rather than give up my dogs or confine them to a life inside the house with less frequent forays outside and constant wiping down. That is no life for them or for me.
