The character Gumby was created and modeled in the early 1950’s by Art Clokey. When given the idea of creating a character resembling the Gingerbread man by his wife Ruth, Art was able to bring his character Gumby to life.

Gumby is made from green clay shaped into a human figure, with his unforgettable slanted formed head the idea originated from an old photograph of his father’s hairstyle.

Art Clokey wanted to make sure Gumby would be able to continue to stand up straight when making a stop-motion film so he created his feet flat. Gumby as chosen to be green as that was his favorite color.

Gumby toy characters have been manufactured for children of all ages to enjoy. A 50th anniversary collection including all of the Gumby characters was manufactured. Gumby merchandise includes mugs, soft dolls, key chains and a Colorforms set manufactured in 1988.

Pokey was Gumby’s friend a talking orange pony and he had a pet dog named Nopey and Prickle a yellow dinosaur. Goo was a flying blue mermaid known for spitting blue goo balls was able to change her shape frequently. Gumby’s mother’s name was Gumba and his father’s name was Gumbo. In 1988 in a syndicated series Minga his sister was added to his family.
